Our world: Time for a positive change? - Talk by Radhanath Swami

October 10, 2011 - we welcomed His Holiness Radhanath Swami to Cambridge University. His Holiness is a spiritual teacher of bhakti-yoga within the Hindu tradition. He spoke on the topic of "Our world: Time for a positive change?"

Radhanath Swami recently released his autobiography, The Journey Home, and is currently on an international author tour. On his recent US tour he spoke at institutions such as Harvard and Princeton, and met with President Barack Obama. On the UK-leg of the tour he will be speaking at the Houses of Parliament on the topic of "Spirituality and the Big Society", as well as at Google in London and at the HSBC headquarters in Canary Wharf. During his ventures, he has also met with the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa and the President of India, Prathiba Patil.

Born and raised in suburban Chicago, America, in the 1950s, Radhanath Swami - then known as Richard Slavin - desired to embark on a journey of spiritual development. After arriving in London, he travelled overland for a number of months before reaching India. Once there, he lived with yogis and mystics in the caves of the Himalaya Mountains, during which he discovered the true path to spirituality. After a long search, he committed himself to bhakti-yoga. Now based in Mumbai, India, he oversees a strong and vibrant spiritual community, along with a number of welfare projects. These include a hospital in Mumbai, the feeding of 250,000 school children daily, and free health services for some of India's poorest communities.

A writeup of his visit to Cambridge

At this special event, His Holiness spoke about his personal journey for truth and meaning in life. He spoke about the experiences which shaped his view of the world, and inspired him to reach out and help people from all walks of life.

The talk ended with a Q&A session involving the audience and the Swami, about his life, his developmental plans and even questions about spirituality in general. This was followed by an assortment of refreshments from samosas to Schloer and cupcakes to kachori, and a chance to purchase a hand-signed copy of his popular autobiography.

This event was hosted by The Bhumi Project (www.bhumiproject.org) in partnership with the Hindu Cultural Society, International Development Society and Krishna Consciousness Society.
